Had the good fortune to be invited to the soft opening of Sprig & Vine vegan restaurant in New Hope last night.
Run by Chef Ross Olchvary – formerly of Horizons (where he was a super awesome chef who taught me lots of good stuff when we worked there together), the simply appointed, welcoming restaurant features a clean, eclectic menu that got me to eat — and enjoy — my veggies.
We started with peanut coconut soup, edamame falafel with black bean tahini and a red oak lettuce salad with shaved fennel and French curry vinaigrette. The texture of the soup threw me off a little (crunchy peanuts!), but the falafel was so delish I soon forgot about that.
We got three entrees.
Cornmeal crusted tempeh with a smoked maple-mustard sauce, mashed potatoes and braised cabbage. The tempeh had a really nice sweet, glazed crust. I think it was maybe the best tempeh I’ve ever had.
The slow roasted root vegetable pave was my favorite. Flavorful root veggies, grilled asparagus and red wine braised shallots topped soft, creamy polenta (noted on the menu as “local”).
I was most excited for the last dish to arrive – grilled tofu with a carrot top pesto topping, moroccan glazed portobello mushrooms on a skewer, a chickpea pancake and braised greens.
The portobellos were so flavorful, and I couldn’t get enough of the greens (kale, I believe). The chickpea pancake was tasty, too. I was just a little disappointed by the tofu steak, which lacked flavor (though the light pesto topping gave it a little something). I’d definitely try it again the next time I go back since it was only the first night of service and I’m confident they’ll work that out.
So there you have it! Vegans taking over the ‘burbs! Check it out for yourself! And bring your own bottle!
