The World Cup: The Biggest Event in Sports…but will you be following?!

Over the next month, millions and millions from all over the World will be glued to their televisions for every second of the World Cup matches.  Why?  Because Football (known as Soccer in the US) is by far the most popular Sport in the World. Fans live and die Football.  To them, this event is their SuperBowl, World Series, NBA Finals, etc. all rolled into one.

In the United States, Soccer has never done well as a spectator Sport.  Sure, kids growing up fill up Soccer fields every weekend and it’s played in High Schools across America.  But in terms of following professional Soccer leagues, it just has never taken off.  How could this be?  How can it be the #1 Sport in the World, but not here?  Americans must be crazy!

The answer is simple.  In this Country, multiple sports are followed with the same passion as those that follow Soccer.  American Football (NFL), Baseball (MLB), and the Basketball (NBA) are followed on a Global level.  Golf, Hockey (NHL), Horse Racing, and Tennis are also covered by the National TV Networks.  Not to mention, Car Racing (Nascar) and Professional Wrestling (WWE) are 2 of the biggest spectator Sports in the US.  And over the last several years, UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) have grown in popularity.  It’s not that we don’t appreciate the athleticism of the athletes or the passion others have for the game. It just that, in this Country, there is so much more to choose from and follow.

When this year’s World Cup is complete, (1) Country will be celebrating for the next 4 years (the World Cup is contested every 4 years), (30) Countries will be in mourning for quite awhile, and the majority of folks in the US will simply focus their attention back on to MLB and look forward to the start of the NFL season.  That’s just the way it is! If you love the Sport, who cares if we do?!

I’ve lived in the Greater Philadelphia Region my entire life and have been watching/following sports since I was 5 years old!  I have grown to love all that is Philly sports – Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Eagles, Big 5, Army-Navy, etc.  I love talking/chatting sports with those who like or hate the Philly teams.  I tell it like it is, whether in favor of our Phillies or in favor of those DAMN YANKEES!  😀

Beg to differ. The world now follows multiple sports too. Auto racing, basketball, tennis, golf (not a sport), horse racing, etc. are all international – along with some winter sports we only got to see in the olympics. Everyone interested in “sports” can have a full plate if they desire. Soccer is just too B-O-R-I-N-G for americans.

Realist – good stuff! I should have been more clear. I clearly know that many sports are followed Internationally. However, they’re ALL followed in the United States to various levels of interest. A couple or a handful may be followed in a particular Country, but you won’t be able to find another Country in the World where Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Tennis, Auto Racing, Hockey, etc. are all followed at the level they are here.

By the way, I agree with you on Soccer being B-O-R-I-N-G but didn’t want to get hate mail!
