The moment the Cavs were eliminated from the NBA Playoffs, sports fans seemed almost hijacked as we awaited LeBron James’ decision on which Team he’ll play for next season. That decision aired live on ESPN and the choice was the Miami Heat, joining fellow free agents Dwyane Wade & Chris Bosh. As we were being hijacked we hear he’s goin to Chicago or New York or maybe even staying in Cleveland. It wasn’t until the week of that rumors of Miami surfaced and when the announcement was finally made a good portion to the sports public, myself included, have made the Miami Heat public enemy #1.
For a month, folks in the United States paid attention to the World Cup, the biggest sporting event in the rest of the World. Team USA made it to the Round of 16 in dramatic fashion, on a Goal in Extra Time by Landon Donovan, the most recognized US Soccer player today. Unfortunately, the Americans would lose their next game in the Knock Out Round but, for the most part, I’d say the casual fan was satisfied.
The Summer has also been filled with some surprised such as Roger Federer losing in the Quarterfinals at Wimbledon, a Championship he had won 6 of the previous 7 years. The Braves, Padres, Rangers, & Reds were in 1st place heading into MLB’s All-Star break. The Flyers erased a 3-0 Series deficit on the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, becoming just the fourth team in NHL, NBA, or MLB to do so. Okay, so that wasn’t officially the Summer but we’ll count it anyway!
On a sad note, last week saw the passing of New York Yankees’ Principle Owner & Managing Director, George Steinbrenner. Over the last 30 some years George Steinbrenner became one of, if not, the most recognized and controversial owners in all of professional sports. He was known for doing whatever it took and whatever it cost to help the Yankees win – and win they did! During his tenure, the Yankees won the World Series 7 times.
As the dog days of Summer arrive, the second half of Baseball has begun and NFL Pre-Season approaches. With it will come more surprises and headlines, but could we possible have as many as we’ve already seen? I guess time will tell!

I’ve lived in the Greater Philadelphia Region my entire life and have been watching/following sports since I was 5 years old! I have grown to love all that is Philly sports – Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Eagles, Big 5, Army-Navy, etc. I love talking/chatting sports with those who like or hate the Philly teams. I tell it like it is, whether in favor of our Phillies or in favor of those DAMN YANKEES! 😀
