The Biggest Rivalry in Sports: ARMY vs. NAVY this Weekend!

Yankees vs. Red Sox…NOPE! Ohio St. vs. Michigan…NOPE! UNC vs. Duke…NOPE! While those are great rivalries, nothing compares to Army vs. Navy.  They’ve been squaring off for over 100 years and they’re set to do battle this Saturday in Philadelphia!

To me, Yankees vs. Red Sox is a close 2nd, but if they’re playing in September and one of the teams is out of the pennant race, the games aren’t as anticipated.  For example, this year, Yankees vs. the Tampa Bay Rays were the big series in September.  Ohio St. vs. Michigan on the last Saturday in November loses a lot of it’s luster if one of the teams isn’t playing for a Big Ten title.  UNC vs. Duke has only gotten big over the last 25 years.  Army vs. Navy is huge whether the teams both having winning records or they’re both 3-8.  It’s the “end all, be all” game for both teams no matter what.

Being from Greater Philadelphia, the game has special meaning.   We’re fortunate to be able to consider it “our game”, despite the game being held in other cities over the years.  Of the 100+ meetings, 81 have been held in Philadelphia.  I’ve been to the NBA Finals, the Belmont Stakes, NASCAR, the NLCS, an Eagles Playoff game at The Vet, a Flyers Playoff game vs. the Devils, and nothing was more special then Army vs. Navy.  I attended the 2003 game, the first held at Lincoln Financial Field.  With the passion and excitement in The Linc, you would’ve thought both teams were undefeated or both had winning records on their way to Bowls games.  That was NOT the case…Army was winless.  Ask anyone from either side and they’d tell you they would rather finish the season 1-11 if that win was in the Army/Navy game then finish 11-1 if the loss was in the Army/Navy game.  Now that’s a rivalry!

GO ARMY, BEAT NAVY or GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY…which will you be chanting this Saturday?!  Enjoy the game!

I’ve lived in the Greater Philadelphia Region my entire life and have been watching/following sports since I was 5 years old!  I have grown to love all that is Philly sports – Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Eagles, Big 5, Army-Navy, etc.  I love talking/chatting sports with those who like or hate the Philly teams.  I tell it like it is, whether in favor of our Phillies or in favor of those DAMN YANKEES!  😀
