It’s More than a Bakery, it’s an Experience for the Whole Family

If you read my story about my car, the Blue Chariot, you know I took a trip up north last week.  Up north for me is Bergen County, New Jersey.  My parents live up there and I went up to visit.  Usually when I go there it is a holiday or at least an occasion for a special dinner.  At dinner my folks always have the best dinner rolls, very fresh and delicious.  My father used to make a special trip to the Rockland Bakery in Nanuet, New York to get them.  From my folk’s house we shoot up Kinderkamack Road, get on Route 303 and it is on the left at the traffic light, at 94 Demarest Road.

Over the years I was asked if I wanted to go to this bakery and had always declined.  My Dad was sick last year and wanted the rolls for Thanksgiving from bakery.  He was so sick, I wanted to get the rolls to make him happy.  I got directions and drove up to New York State.  When I found the place the parking lot was packed, a mob scene, what the hell is going on here, it’s a bakery for heaven sake.  Well I went in and it is an EXPERIENCE!  You enter this hallway and there are loaves of bread in the hall and there are bags and gloves to handle rolls, you arm yourself with a glove and bag and proceed to the roll room, I guess that’s what you would call it.  You will stand there for a minute with your mouth open, as other folks who have been there before walk around you knowing that this is your first time there.  There are probably 50 to 60 racks of rolls, bagels, and breads, of all kinds.  My sister and I have favorites and we ran around looking for those.  I love olive rolls and she loves these soda bread rolls, but they have all kinds of rolls and full loaves of bread.  A huge conveyor brings hard rolls down and they are placed in huge bins for everyone to help themselves, with gloves of course.  Any kind of roll or bread is available in this very unique experience, and you help yourself.  Hunting for what you want is fun.

The also have a full deli with a huge assortment of meats and cheeses.  There is another part of the bakery that has an equally large number of cakes, pies, cookies and pastries – you are assisted with those by the staff.  I have not tried these items but if the line is any indication of the quality, they are superb.

Apparently, word has gotten out about this place, they distribute their fine products to businesses and institutions in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Delaware.  So if you live in these areas there is a chance you have tried these rolls or other baked goodies without knowing it.

OK – So I suggest that if you are ever in this area, take your friends, family and kids to see this amazing place. I wish I had gone years ago.  I do go there now every time I visit the my folks.  Take my word for it is worth the trip!

Anyone who lives within a 60 mile radius of this bakery should make the trip. I consider myself an aficionado of baked goods, and haven’t seen anything like this. The great part is that you get to select everything yourself and walk among the racks and smell the aromas. It is definitely worth the trip.

I want to go! I know a good roll when I bite one and it’s been awhile.
