At Sunset on Sunday, December 2, Hanukkah begins. Jewish families will light the first eight candles, one for each day to commemorate the miracle of the Maccabees’ victory and the miracle of the oil that burnt for eight days in the Temple. Every night, for all eight days, members of the family will gather around the Hanukkah Menorah.
Latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiot (jelly donuts) are the most popular Hanukkah treat. If you serve latkes with sour cream, do not serve meat with your dinner. Jewish tradition is to never mix meat and dairy in the same meal.
