A month ago, the casual sports fan in Philadelphia may not have known what team Mike Richards played for. Or, they may have heard of him, knew he was a Flyer, but nothing more.
Today, the Flyers are heading to Chicago for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals and Mike Richards is leading the way. Today, sports fans in Philadelphia KNOW he’s leading the way.
Richards was the 24th overall pick of the Flyers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut with the Flyers in 2005. Before the start of the ’08-’09 Season, Mike Richards was named the 17th Captain in Flyers history and has shown the grit, hard work, determination, and passion that Philly fans have come to love in their athletes. He has shown the willingness to lay it all on the line (just YouTube his Goal in Game 5 vs. Montreal) to help the team win. If he keeps it up, he’ll join Allen Iverson, Brian Dawkins, and Pete Rose, to name a few, as players Philadelphia fans grew to love.
As Saturday approaches for the start of the Stanley Cup Finals, fans in Philadelphia are getting “Flyered Up” as they paint the Town Orange & Black. If Mike Richards is able to lead the Flyers to their first Stanley Cup in 35 years, he’ll not only be the newest Superstar in Philadelphia, but will also reach “Rock Star” status in the City of Brotherly Love!

I’ve lived in the Greater Philadelphia Region my entire life and have been watching/following sports since I was 5 years old! I have grown to love all that is Philly sports – Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Eagles, Big 5, Army-Navy, etc. I love talking/chatting sports with those who like or hate the Philly teams. I tell it like it is, whether in favor of our Phillies or in favor of those DAMN YANKEES! 😀
