How to Bake Potatoes in a Microwave, So they Turn out Great!

I was in the store the other day and was thinking about baked potatoes.  There is nothing like a baked potato! I like them wrapped in foil off the grill or baked for a long time in the oven.  I generally don’t like them cooked in the microwave.  It seems they never come out right!  They come out hard and adding time doesn’t seem to help, I had given up, cooking them this way!

Until the other day, as I looked for potatoes, I discovered these Steamables!  Potatoes, cleaned in a bag that I put in the microwave, nuke `em and they are ready.  I was skeptical, but to my surprise they were great!

OK, so why don’t I buy the potatoes I want and nuke them in my own bag! And that is what I did.  I took 4 or 5 potatoes about the same size, put them in a microwave safe ziplock bag.  (A few potatoes were larger than others so I cut them in half, so all potatoes were about the same size.)  I then zipped it shut and put the bag and potatoes into the microwave.  I cooked them on high for 10 minutes!  The bag did pop open during the process so I zipped it shut and continued to cook them till the time was up.  Be very careful with them when they are done, steam comes out of the bag and the steam, moisture and potatoes are very hot and will burn you.  So use oven mitts when you move the bag of hot potatoes around!

They were great!  Now I cook baked potatoes like this all the time!  I love them and so will you!  Enjoy!

As the result of Dodie’s reply we suggest you use these: Here are some ZipLock bags that are designed to use in the microwave.  Use these for best and safest results!

I’m going to try this ASAP. Is the plastic bag microwave-safe regarding the leaching of chemicals? I find that nuked potatoes and nuked water have a different taste than things cooked in the microwave. Do potatoes cooked in a plastic bag taste like REAL baked potatoes, i.e. those slow-baked or grilled?

I used a ZipLock Freezer bag. I don’t know about the leaching of chemicals but I certainly don’t taste anything. I suppose you could or should get a microwave safe bag, and since you asked I suggest a microwave safe bag if you can find one.. And yes they do taste like REAL bake potaotes! Yum!

I would think that the skins on nuked potatoes in the bag would still be soft. I’m a fan of a crispier skin. Maybe after nuking them I’ll try popping them in the toaster over for a few minutes. Still would be quicker than doing them in the over or over the grill.

I have been buying the steamables for years, the special bag is designed to keep it under pressure and not explode in the microwave. They have several different kinds of potatoes too. It is worth a little extra it not to have any mess to clean up.

Just poke a few holes in the bag and there’s no mess
