Eagles’ fans have been waiting all off-season, and since the departure of veteran QB, Donovan McNabb, for the season to get started with a new quarterback leading the way. That QB is Kevin Kolb, who has been waiting patiently to get his chance as the starter while serving as the backup to McNabb. Fans have great expectations for Kolb, who seems to fit perfectly into the Eagles offensive style with his quick decision making and accuracy, and having been the first QB in NFL history to throw for over 300 yards in his first two NFL starts.
The departure of McNabb moved Michael Vick up into the backup role. Vick’s previous off-field issues have been well documented to say the least but the Eagles Organization not only gave him a shot last year but also stuck with him for the 2010 Season.
That brought us to last Sunday. Kevin Kolb kicked off the season as the starter with Michael Vick as the backup and being used in other offensive packages. The stage was set and fans were excited. The only problem is, Kolb basically struggled throughout the first half and never really got into a rhythm. To make matters worse, he also suffered a concussion. This meant Michael Vick would start the second half and get an opportunity to prove to Eagles’ fans and fans throughout the NFL that he can still make an impact, and what an impact he made! He rallied the offense and seemed to have energized the players around him. Trailing by as many as 17 points, Vick had the Eagles on a potential game-tying drive before a terrible play call by the Eagles’ coaching staff on a 4th and 1/2 yard, which they didn’t convert.
As Sunday’s game with the Detroit Lions approaches, it appears Kevin Kolb won’t be cleared to play due to the concussion, allowing Michael Vick to get the start. It seems obvious that if Vick plays well once again, that he’ll be the obvious choice to move into the starting role even when Kolb is cleared to play. NOT SO FAST! The Eagles didn’t groom Kevin Kolb for 3 years and part ways with their Franchise Quarterback of 10 years to simply give up on him after one bad half of football!
What we have learned is that Michael Vick appears to be back! Where last year he appeared not to have the step he once had in Atlanta, on Sunday he appeared to have the burst of speed that made him one of the NFL’s most dangerous players. And if Kevin Kolb isn’t able to show he can lead this team after 5 or 6 starts, it’s great to know that Vick has the ability to step in and have the confidence of both his Team and the fans!
Should be an interesting couple weeks in Eagle-ville!

I’ve lived in the Greater Philadelphia Region my entire life and have been watching/following sports since I was 5 years old! I have grown to love all that is Philly sports – Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Eagles, Big 5, Army-Navy, etc. I love talking/chatting sports with those who like or hate the Philly teams. I tell it like it is, whether in favor of our Phillies or in favor of those DAMN YANKEES! 😀
