Should be an EXCITING Fall in Philadelphia!: Michael Vick, Red October, the Flyers & Evan Turner

Today is the first official day of Fall and there is a whole lot going on with Philly sports! Michael Vick has been named the Eagles’ starting QB moving forward, the Phillies are once again in 1st place in the NL East, the Flyers are getting ready to drop the puck, and there is some excitement for 76ers’ fans as Evan Turner will be getting ready to make his NBA debut!  All this PLUS my Temple Owls getting set to possibly upset Penn State!

Two weeks ago, Birds’ fans were getting ready for the start of the NFL Season and the beginning of the “Kevin Kolb era”.  Here we are heading into Week 3, following a Kolb concussion and stellar play by Michael Vick, and Eagles’ Coach Andy Reid has named Vick the starter moving forward.  Oh yeah, just one day after saying Kevin Kolb was “his guy”.  I don’t have a problem with Vick being named the starter, only with the way it was handled.  In my opinion, the Eagles’ Organization has embarrassed themselves once again, but what else is new?  Did I mention former Eagle, Donovan McNabb and the Washington Redskins will be in town Week 4?!  This is getting good!

Two months ago, the Phillies had the fan base nervous with injures and inconsistent offense.  As October approaches, the Phils hold a 5-game lead in the NL East and are most experts’ favorite in the NL.  They’re getting great starting pitching, the offense appears to be back on track, and Brad Lidge’s slider is once again disappearing, much like it did on the final out of the ’08 World Series, to clinch the Championship for the Phils.  In a few short weeks, the town will be painted Red!

Speaking of the town being painted, it wasn’t too long ago that the town was painted Orange & Black, as the Flyers made a miraculous and exciting trip to the Stanley Cup Finals.  They may have come up a little short, but they attracted the casual Philly fan and I’m guessing more folks in town will be excited to see the puck drop shortly.

Also around the corner will be the NBA debut of Sixers’ rookie, Evan Turner, who was drafted with the second overall pick.  Turner will be coached by former Sixer, Doug Collins, who is best known for coaching Michael Jordan, and his color commentary on NBC and TNT over the years.  No one is expecting Turner & Collins to lead the Sixers to the NBA Finals but most feel it is a move in the right direction for an organization that has fallen over the years from being one of the NBA’s elite franchises in terms of popularity and attendance.

And how could I forget about the team representing North Broad Street, my Temple Owls?!  Coming off their first bowl game in 30 years, the Owls are off to a 3-0 start as they head to Happy Valley for a meeting with Penn St.  If there ever was going to be a year where Temple pulls the colossal upset, this would be the year.  And how sweet it would be for TUMF Land (if you’re a Temple grad, you KNOW what I’m talkin’ about!)!

Enjoy the Fall, Philly sports fans!  I know I will!

I’ve lived in the Greater Philadelphia Region my entire life and have been watching/following sports since I was 5 years old!  I have grown to love all that is Philly sports – Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Eagles, Big 5, Army-Navy, etc.  I love talking/chatting sports with those who like or hate the Philly teams.  I tell it like it is, whether in favor of our Phillies or in favor of those DAMN YANKEES!  😀
