My bruise has an arm!

bruise arm

For the last several months I have been on blood thinners for a condition I have and man, oh man, do I bruise, sometimes.  Yesterday I had my blood taken and the phlebotomist had a hard time finding my vein.  She rooted around till she eventually got it and the blood we needed, but today it looks like my bruise has an arm.  Back in the day, you would have your blood taken in your Doctor’s office by a nurse who usually did a very good job hitting the vein.  I did have my blood taken at the Doctor’s office recently and the nurse missed the vein two times and got it on the third time.  Maybe my veins move or hide from the needle.

Am I trying to be funny – you bet I am!  This is one of those things that we have no control over and neither does the phlebotomist or nurse.  If the phlebotomist hits the spot on the first shot we should feel lucky and it is likely we will have a small bruise or a tiny hole where the needle went in.  The veins are under the skin and unless they stick way out and are raised on the arm, the blood-taker is shooting for a target that they cannot see.  So I am not angry and I am laughing the bruise off.

You have to have a sense of humor.  The place I went to yesterday had a cartoon on the wall right next to where they take the blood.  It was a guy in a chair and the blood-taker says to him, make a fist.  And then the blood-takers says with the other hand.  The guy was getting ready to punch her with his free fist.  It was a cute cartoon and we had a good laugh over it.  Remember the next time you get blood drawn that hitting the vein is harder than it looks and if the phlebotomist or nurse misses your vein they are more disappointed than you are.  They deserve a break and thanks for trying to help you, so if they miss your vein, thank them for their help and enjoy the rest of your day.
